Can you imagine a school in this day and age where students willingly turn in their cell phones on arrival, and don’t see them again until the next vacation? Midland School in California has been all about building intentional community since its founding in 1932. Today that means making sure students stay connected to each other IRL (in real life) not just on their screens. Set on 2,860 acres of rolling hills and ranchland in the Santa Ynez Valley, Midland hosts about 80 boarding students and 20 faculty who value connection to place, environmental sustainability, and community living. Learn about what makes Midland unique: place-based courses, experiential learning opportunities, the jobs program, outdoor leadership, our 10-acre organic farm, and our natural horsemanship program set on a working cattle ranch. Midland combines all this with rigorous college preparation AND students getting sufficient rest and leisure time. What systems do we have in place to make this work?
