I am currently Head of the Technology Faculty at the International School of Penang (Uplands), Malaysia. In this role, I oversee the Design & Technology and ICT/Computer Science Departments for Years 7 to 13. I also teach KS3, IGCSE and IB Design Technology and KS3 Computer Science. Previous roles I have worked in include: Digital Learning Coordinator; IB MYP Math & Design teacher and MYP Coordinator.
I believe strongly in giving students choice and empowering them to take control of their learning, and that my job is to carefully craft a framework that gives them the support, structure and skills they need to make informed decisions. I am an advocate for the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the importance of providing students with multiple means of engagement, representation, action and expression. To this end, I have spent the last few years working on ways to structure lessons and feedback using digital badges and Google tools. Some of my efforts can be found at badgedocs.com.
I love the design process and helping my students apply their empathy, creativity and knowledge to develop solutions to authentic problems. I am still working on how I can better structure my units/classes/assessments to support creativity and innovation and my current obsession is with the communication of design ideas. I see this as being a critical part of helping students to be innovative, as one of the best ways for students to share ideas, give feedback on ideas and borrow ideas is for them to be able to communicate them clearly and succinctly to others.
