Overview

As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to grow across different industries, it’s becoming increasingly clear that it has the potential to transform the field of education. From personalized learning to predictive analytics, AI can offer a range of benefits that can enhance teaching and learning experiences in K-12 education.

The AI in Education Symposium aims to provide K-12 educators and leaders with insights into the practical applications of AI in education, and how it can be leveraged to improve student outcomes. The symposium will feature a keynote speaker who will provide a big-picture overview of AI in education, a panel discussion featuring experts in the field, and breakout presentations showcasing real-world examples of AI in education.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore the ways in which AI can be used to personalize learning experiences, streamline administrative tasks and apply AI tools with different age groups of students and within different disciplines. They will leave with practical takeaways that they can apply in their classrooms the very next day, as well as a broader understanding of the role that AI can play in education.

Amelia King

Amelia is the Educational Technology Coach at Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi, where she supports staff and students to improve their digital and technological capabilities both in the classroom and in wider school life. She wears many hats, and can usually be found doing some kind of wild project in the makerspace if she's not in a classroom or in a million maker meetings! Amelia is passionate about developing creativity and a Maker Mindset in both adults and children, and believes in the importance of teachers ‘playing’ with technology in order to develop confidence in their own technological prowess.

Joe Dale

Independent Languages Consultant

Joe Dale is an independent languages consultant from the UK who works with a range of organisations such as Network for Languages, ALL, The British Council, the BBC, Skype, Microsoft and The Guardian. He was host of the TES MFL forum for six years, former SSAT Languages Lead Practitioner, a regular conference speaker and recognised expert on technology and language learning. He has spoken at conferences and run training courses in Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, the Far East and Australasia. He was a member of the Ministerial Steering Group on languages for the UK coalition government and advised on the Linguanet Worldwide project for The Language Company. He created ICT activities for the new Institut Français, ALL and Network for Languages Primary French Project Niveau Bleu, Blanc and Rouge courses and was short-listed for a NAACE Impact Award in 2013 too. Joe supported the Erasmus Plus project Conflict to Cooperation with 5 European countries and the Erasmus Plus Project Learning to think and live outside the box. He recently organised and co-hosted a 10 part series of webinars Saturday Tech-Talk in collaboration with the British Council in Indonesia and iTELL and worked on the Nusantara Go project for the British Council in Indonesia and PearTree Languages in 2022. He also worked on the Supporting Schools Reform in Algeria project through the British Council 2019-2020. He was recently described in a Guardian article as an 'MFL guru' and 'the man behind the #mfltwitterati.

Louis Wong

Academic Senior Teacher | Head of STEM, Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School

Louis Wong, a fervent advocate of STEM education, hails from one of the globally recognized top International Baccalaureate (IB) schools in Hong Kong. His dedication to promoting creativity, enhancing the growth mindset, and fostering computational thinking among junior secondary students has led him to develop a school-based STEM curriculum tailored to these objectives.

In a bid to upskill his fellow educators, Louis has regularly hosted professional development workshops focused on educational technology (EdTech) for his entire school. His extensive knowledge and innovative teaching methods have caught the attention of the Hong Kong Education Bureau, resulting in invitations to deliver insightful lectures on STEM and gifted education to other local STEM educators.

On the international stage, Louis collaborated with Kognity to contribute his expertise to the authorship of the IBDP Physics e-textbook. He also led a seminar discussing new curriculum changes and strategies, imparting his knowledge to teachers worldwide.

Throughout his tenure, many student STEM projects guided by Louis have garnered recognition and awards over a decade in diverse areas such as product design, programming, 3D printing, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Virtual Reality (VR). His consistent track record of student success led to him receiving the Outstanding STEM Teacher Award in 2019.

In an endeavor to further ignite student interest in STEM, Louis orchestrated an internal Hackathon, drawing support from a team of senior students, teachers, and parents. This event was duly recognized and honored with the Stakeholder Engagement Award in the EdTech Heroes Award (K12 Track) by Esperanza.

Niall Walker

Niall is Head of Primary Libraries at Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi. Niall supports the learning of students throughout the college by managing and refining the library physical and digital resources, including a range of specially selected catalogues of fiction and non-fiction books for all ages of our College students from Toddlers to Year 13. He plans and leads weekly lessons for all Primary School students to support their growth and enthusiasm as independent researchers who can ably and confidently find reliable answers that embolden their curiousities, as well as developing their love of reading and imagination. Niall is an experienced school librarian who has led library teams in two secondary schools in the UK, as well as creating and leading national and regional innovative reading programmes in schools and libraries across Scotland. Niall has a Master of Arts degree in Politics with Honours from the University of Dundee and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education with the University of Sunderland.

James Collinson

HoF Science, Alice Smith School

An outstanding teacher and dynamic leader who keeps innovation at the core of all he does, James spent the last several years driving learning and teaching at Alice Smith as Lead Learning Coach before shifting focus to curriculum leadership as Head of Faculty for Science and Design Technology. With a passion for efficiency, system development and app design, James has leveraged AI to further enhance and streamline workflows for his teams and, along with his colleague, Harry Rodger, has developed a suite of pedagogically-driven; andragogically-sound training courses for educators of all skill levels. These are carefully crafted to upskill participants in building AI tools into their working practices, which one attendee described as “one of the most engaging, interesting and well delivered sessions I have ever been to”

Harry Rodger

HoD Physics, Alice Smith School

Harry is the Head of Physics at Alice Smith School where he leads AI provision for the school alongside his colleague, James Collinson. Harry’s focus has been using AI to allow teachers to differentiate and engage on a microscopic level; developing resources bespoke to each individual student. He has conducted training sessions for entire school faculties, lowering the barriers of entry for AI integration and showcasing the most inspiring, cutting-edge uses to motivate teachers. “The most captivating and impressively presented session I've ever attended” was how one delegate portrayed his last workshop. Additionally, Harry has collaborated with senior leadership to pinpoint traditional challenges faced by schools. Leveraging this insight, he has devised AI-driven solutions to empower both educational institutions and their students. One notable example is the design of a system that provides timely support to students during unforeseen events, like sudden school closures due to poor air quality.

Dalton Flanagan

As a dedicated Learning and Innovation Coach at Chinese International School in Hong Kong, I bring over a decade of experience in education, having worked across Asia, including Thailand, Cambodia, and Hong Kong.

Fueled by a passion for designing authentic project-based learning experiences, I strive to connect students' learning journeys with cutting-edge technologies, fostering engagement and promoting in-depth exploration. My enthusiasm for discovering and experimenting with new technologies drives me to seamlessly integrate them into the classroom environment.

My recent forays into the realm of advanced AI models, such as Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and ChatGPT, have further expanded my ability to engage and inspire students and educators. As an ardent advocate for knowledge sharing and collaboration, I delight in presenting my educational explorations at conferences worldwide.

Michael Boll

Michael, instructor, and designer, is no stranger to juggling his expertise in education, training, startups, technology, and marketing – all while balancing on a unicycle. His mission, should he choose to accept it (and he does), is to fearlessly blend existing and newfangled technologies in the classroom, creating an educational smoothie of epic proportions. As Michael leaps headfirst into the thrilling and somewhat chaotic world of artificial intelligence, he remains tickled pink to be part of the discoveries that will leave no classroom untouched, and no student without a smile. Please note he is fibbing about the unicycle.

Warren Apel

Director of Technology, The American School in Japan

Warren Apel is the Director of Technology at The American School in Japan. He serves as the Regional Technology Consultant for EARCOS and the Global Project Facilitator for the US Dept of State’s World Digital School Project. He is a National Board Certified Teacher, an Apple Distinguished Educator, and a Google for Education Certified Innovator. He has given presentations and conducted workshops at conferences for ISTE, Learning2, ECIS, EARCOS, and NESA and at Apple Education Events and Google Summits around the world.

Sarah Sutter

Teacher (Design Innovation & Visual Art), The American School in Japan (ASIJ)

A 30 year veteran high school teacher and former technology integrator, Sarah Sutter currently teaches Design Technology and Visual Art at The American School in Japan (ASIJ) in Tokyo. Sarah works in ASIJ’s Creative Arts & Design Center, teaching Design: Products and Idea to Object, 3D Digital Design & Fabrication Art classes, using laser cutters, 3d printers, and a range of materials in a Design Thinking, collaborative / team based classroom setting. She also designed and teaches Global Citizenship for a Digital Age, one of the options to meet the computer literacy requirement for graduation. Her visual art courses have included ceramics, art foundations, photography, graphic design and web design, among other media. Sarah is a Google Certified Innovator, and presents regularly on various technology related topics. She has presented at conferences including EARCOS (several years), L2 Asia and FabLearn Asia in Japan, Educon in Philadelphia, Create Make Learn in Vermont, and many more. Sarah also taught photography and digital imaging at the University of Maine in Augusta for 5 years, and MEd multimedia online graduate courses at UMaine. Sarah's undergraduate degree is from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and she has an MFA in Lens Based Media (photo and video), and an MEd in Instructional Technology.

Jeff Swisher

Teacher/Technologist/Advocate, Morton High School/Indiana Council for the Social Studies

Jeff Swisher is an accomplished educator and technology expert with a passion for American history and Computer Science. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies Education and a Master of Arts in American History from Purdue University. With a strong foundation in technology, He also studied Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence Track) and a minor Mathematics at Taylor University, where he was part of the National Team Pascal Programming Champions in 1987.

His dedication to teaching is evident in his experience at various educational institutions, such as School City of Hammond and East Porter School Corporation. Throughout his career, He has taught a diverse range of courses, including U.S. History, American Government, Current Events, Robotics, and Computer Science. He has also been actively involved in extracurricular activities, serving as a coach for academic and robotics teams, and leading initiatives such as the Middle School Coding Club and Mock Trial.

In 2020, he founded Animated History, a project dedicated to bringing history alive through technology. This venture has led to the development of interactive and animated resources, such as a periodic table for FDR’s New Deal, a World War II series, and a display of landmark Supreme Court cases.

Levent Erdoğan

Drawing from his background in the Los Angeles film industry and Masters in Learning, Design & Technology, Levent has notably excelled in teaching Digital Arts to students of all ages. As the Director of Digital Innovation at Bloom KKCA Academy, he leads campus-wide tech integrations and innovation strategies. With a strong emphasis on Project-Based Learning, he seamlessly integrates film and digital education methodologies. Recognized as a frontrunner in his field, Levent not only spearheads educational advancements but is also shaping the landscape for the next era of digital creativity.

Jessica White

Senior Director of Learning Sciences and PhD candidate at University of Sussex

Jessica is currently a PhD researcher at the University of Sussex in the Education Department. She is also Senior Director of Learning Sciences at Area9. Formerly she was a Research Mentor at UCL for Educate, the 4.5 million EU backed initiative with Nesta, Besa and F6S, that has supported EdTech Startups in efficacy led improved services and products by combining research expertise with innovation. She spear-headed beta testing at McGraw Hill Education with their portfolio of products in schools, companies and Higher Ed as an Academic Consultant, identifying improvements in relation to learners & teachers needs. She collaborated with several startup implementing new directions for their platforms or products with beta testing. In Austria she collaborated with local Austrian governmental offices with her charity Thinc managing, implementing and facilitating several Austrian and EU projects reforming education with technology and creativity. With her charity she collaborated with Google Arts and Cultural Institute empowering women from Meghalaya by giving them a voice through an online, interactive education gallery with Google. In Germany she founded Te(a)chology, a series of events that are facilitating discussions on Education, Technology and society. She speaks publicly on how digital education, metacognition, AI and ethics impact learning environments and society with Chartwell Speakers. In addition she is a keen arts enthusiast, she has previously collaborated with artists to give them new directions particularly from an education perspective.

Greg Clinton

Greg Clinton is the Director of Technologies and Research & Development at American International School Chennai. Prior to his current position, Greg taught literature and philosophy at Colegio Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Lima, Peru; Stony Brook University in New York; and American Embassy School, New Delhi; and schools in Khartoum, Sudan and Tokyo, Japan. He holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy and a PhD in Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies from Stony Brook University. He is one of the founding members of an AI in Education Collaborative with membership spanning the globe, and is the leader of the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools (NESA) virtual school project.

Dr. Sayed Mahmoud

Dr. Sayed Mahmoud is a Makerspace Manager who is devoted to nurturing innovation and creativity among students. With a foundation in technology integration and librarianship, Dr. Mahmoud is committed to bridging the divide between traditional educational approaches and the requisites of the 21st century through maker-centered learning.

Dr. Mahmoud embarked on an educational journey at Cairo University, which flourished further through advanced studies in ICT and Digital Learning at the University of Newcastle, as well as Library and Information Science at UCL. This journey was further enriched during doctoral studies at Lancaster University.

In the current role, Dr. Mahmoud emphasizes empowering students to hone both their technical and life skills. Dr. Mahmoud guides them to effectively utilize contemporary tools and equipment, enhancing their learning experiences and future opportunities. Having a substantial background in 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machine operation, Dr. Mahmoud remains steadfast in the mission to cultivate the innovators of tomorrow, today.

Stephen Taylor

Stephen is the Director of Innovation in Learning & Teaching at the Western Academy of Beijing. A current EdD student at the University of Bath, Stephen has been exploring Generative AI in Education, with a focus on how schools might adapt in ways that are practical, ethical, safe and inclusive. Stephen sees this moment as one to meaningfully explore what it means for our learners to have purpose & agency as they grow into an ever-more uncertain world. Mykhailo Shapkin

Comp Sci and Maths Teacher with background in software engineering, big fan of AI and automation in education. Trying to save myself and fellow educators as much time as possible

SQ Mah

SQ is a former student at Renaissance College Hong Kong. He then went on to work as an engineer at Google, after he studied Electrical Engineering Computer Sciences, and Business Administration at UC Berkeley.

SQ has been recognized as SCMP's Scientist and Mathematician of the Year, and first got into AI by building AI software for some of Hong Kong's largest institutions like the MTR,. He is now working on AI Blocks, a company aimed at bringing AI education to all students, without any math or programming.

Justin Hardman

Justin has a passion to support schools in better integration of technology into school programs with a focus on strategy, leadership and planning for systemic change. He has a background in programming and web development including development of a customized learning platform that was featured in conferences from Washington DC, Shanghai and Singapore and in international ed-tech publications.

He was previously Director of Technology at Hong Kong International School where he led the school through a variety of digital learning initiatives including development of a customized solutions, leading a technology planning process and implementing at 1:1 laptop rollout.

Justin has a Bachelors in Economics from the University of Queensland, is a Google Certified Trainer and an Apple Distinguished Educator. He is a New Zealand and Australian citizen but has lived in Hong Kong longer than anywhere else.

Benjamin Sheridan

Ben Sheridan has been a proud educator for 18 years. He has taught in international schools in Thailand, India, Cambodia, Korea, and Indonesia. Ben has worked as a classroom teacher, learning innovation coach, technology coordinator, instructional designer, university lecturer, and consultant. Ben is passionate about using sound pedagogy together with innovative technology to accelerate learning. He feels technology can be leveraged to enhance literacy, increase student motivation and engagement, and empower students to take control of their learning. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership with a focus on professional learning.
