Data Visualization in Schools: Collecting and Visualizing What Matters

Schools have been talking about being  “data-informed” for a long time. In practice, the use of data tends to be compartmentalized (by area of school or department) and very much dependent on having the people with the skills to do the data manipulation rather than it being the hands of those who might make use of it. 

The purpose of this workshop is to give participants an overview of what is possible in a school with a “culture of data”. Looking at both academic and non-academic data to better understand the current state of play and to make decisions for the future. The workshop will look a the big picture of what is possible with data and then focus on how to pull in data and build a dashboard using Google Data Studio. 

In this workshop we will cover:

• Tools to assist in building your first data dashboard
• Setting the stage: Ensuring data is collected and stored in such a way that it can be more easily utilized for subsequent analysis and visualization
• Collection of non-academic data – getting creative with sources of data
• Protocols for analysis of data – how can we be sure the right people are in the room and are interpreting the data correctly?
